Steve Anthony Ballmer was born in Detroit, Michigan to Frederic and Beatrice Ballmer in 1956. Growing up, he did not have as luxurious a life as he enjoys now, but his parents strove to provide the best environment to ensure their son’s success. Regardless of this, Steve was a brilliant academic with a particular affinity for mathematics. It is this intelligence that allowed him to be valedictorian of his high school class and to graduate magna cum laude from Harvard with a degree in applied mathematics and economics in 1977. It was here at Havard that the seeds for Steve and Bill Gates' lifelong friendship were planted. After graduation, Steve went on to get a job as an assistant product manager at Procter and Gamble, where he worked for two years before going back to school to get an MBA from Stanford. During the following summer, Steve approached Bill Gates seeking a summer internship to which Bill Gates countered with a permanent position at his company. Being A forward thinker and with a solid resume under his belt, Steve agreed and in 1980, he joined Microsoft permanently.
